{"id":7581,"date":"2026-08-14T08:34:38","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T06:34:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trypool.com\/?p=7581"},"modified":"2026-08-14T10:43:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T08:43:41","slug":"calculate-the-cross-sectional-area-of-an-led-strip-cable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trypool.com\/en\/blog\/calcular-seccion-cable-tira-led\/","title":{"rendered":"How do you work out the cable cross-section for a LED pool strip?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choosing an LED strip for your swimming pool isn\u2019t just a matter of working out how many metres you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should also be aware that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>if it works at <strong>12 V or 24 V<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how much it consumes per metre;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how many metres you are going to install;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how far away the fountain will be;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether you will be using one or more strips;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and what cable cross-section is required for each route.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it is not calculated correctly, the following may occur <strong>voltage drop<\/strong> and the strip may not be under the expected tension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To avoid having to do all these calculations by hand, we have created a calculator specifically for LED strip installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-3e41869c wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/trypool.com\/en\/calculadora-tiras-led\/\">CALCULATE MY INSTALLATION<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Before calculating the cable length: choose the right LED strip<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first thing is to know exactly which product you are going to install. Do not calculate the cable length using approximate figures. Always check the technical data sheet:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Voltage<\/strong><br>12 V or 24 V.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Type of current<\/strong><br>For example, 12 V DC.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Power<\/strong><br>Usually expressed in W\/m.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Length<\/strong><br>Metres of strip that you are going to use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Type of lighting<\/strong><br>White or RGB.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Number of drivers<\/strong><br>For example, 2-wire or 4-wire RGB.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For swimming pool installations, you should also check that the strip is designed for that application. The tool is designed so that you can enter the actual details of the installation and compare different options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1. Select the voltage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please indicate whether the strip operates at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>12 V<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>24 V<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Always use the voltage specified in the product data sheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2. Enter the W\/m<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-content-justification-center is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find the power of the strip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>10 W\/m<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re going to install 4 metres:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>10 \u00d7 4 = 40 W<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The calculator will perform this calculation automatically.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3. Enter the number of metres of tape<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It indicates only the length of <strong>each strip<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Example: <strong>3.5 m<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can then specify how many identical strips you are going to install.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4. Enter the number of strips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1 strip<\/strong>\/ <strong>2 strips<\/strong>\/ <strong>3 strips<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This figure is important because it increases the total power output of the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5. Enter the distance from the source<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Measure from the power supply to the strip. Explain how you are going to wire several strips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re going to install several, you can choose from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Standard cable<\/strong> o <strong>Separate cable per strip<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This information may significantly affect the required section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 8. Insert the cable that is soldered to the strip<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the strip includes, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>20 cm of 0.34 mm\u00b2 cable<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enter these values as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although it is a short stretch, it forms part of the circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 9. Choose between single-ended or dual-ended power supply<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can specify:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Feeding from one end<\/strong> o <strong>Feeding from both ends<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you select two end points, enter the distance for each route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 10. Enter the section you want to check<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1.5 mm\u00b2<\/strong>\/  <strong>2.5 mm\u00b2<\/strong> \/  <strong>4 mm\u00b2<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The calculator will check that section and will also display the <strong>recommended commercial section<\/strong> based on the data entered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-3e41869c wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/trypool.com\/en\/calculadora-tiras-led\/\">Testing a section of cable <\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. How to interpret the calculator\u2019s result<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you have entered the data, focus primarily on four values:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Total power<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the power consumption of all the connected strips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Current<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">State the amperes that the circuit will need to carry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Voltage drop<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It indicates how much voltage is lost along the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recommended section<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the commercial section suggested by the tool based on the data entered and the configured drop criteria.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The calculator initially uses a criterion based on the maximum drop in the <strong>3 %<\/strong>, which can be amended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, at 12 V:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3 \u00d7 % at 12 V = 0.36 V<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>12 \u2212 0.36 = 11.64 V<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The calculator serves as a tool to assist in analysing voltage drop. The complete installation must also verify the capacity of the conductors, the power supply, the controller, the protective devices and the applicable electrical requirements.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Why does distance have such a big impact?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the cable has resistance. The longer the distance, the greater the voltage drop may be if we maintain the same cross-sectional area. Let\u2019s look at a very simple example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Panel: <strong>10 W\/m<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Length: <strong>3.5 m<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Power: <strong>10 \u00d7 3.5 = 35 W<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 12 V: <strong>35 \u00f7 12 = 2.92 A<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not the same to carry that 2.92 A for: <strong>2 metres<\/strong> that during: <strong>20 metres<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why two installations using exactly the same strip may require different cables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. What happens if we install several LED strips?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The powers are added together. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have two strips of: <strong>35 W each<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Total power:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>35 + 35 = 70 W<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 12 V:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>70 \u00f7 12 = 5.83 A<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is another important point:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do the strips share a cable or do they have separate circuits?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Standard cable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>SOURCE\n   \u2193\nMAIN CABLE\n   \u251c\u2500\u2500 Strand 1\n   \u2514\u2500\u2500 Strand 2<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main section carries the current from both strips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Separate lines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SOURCE <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u251c\u2500\u2500 Cable 1 \u2192 Strip 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2514\u2500\u2500 Cable 2 \u2192 Strip 2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each journey is calculated separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The calculator allows you to compare the two configurations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Feeding from one or both ends<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strip can be powered from a single end:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>CONTROLADOR \u2192 &#91; TIRA LED ]<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, in certain installations, it may be advisable to supply power from both ends:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>              \u2192 END A\nCONTROLLER\n \u2192 END B<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can be helpful when we want to minimise voltage differences along a long strip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The calculator allows you to select the following directly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Feed from both ends and enter the distance to each side.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. How to connect several LED strips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When there are several strips, we recommend planning the installation <strong>in parallel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>Source\n   \u2193\nModulator\n   \u251c\u2500\u2500 Strip 1\n   \u251c\u2500\u2500 Strip 2\n   \u2514\u2500\u2500 Strip 3<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if each strip needs to be powered at both ends:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>Source\n   \u2193\nSame modulator\n   \u2502\n   \u251c\u2500\u2500 Strip 1 \u2192 end A\n   \u2502 \u2192 end B\n   \u2502\n   \u251c\u2500\u2500 Strip 2 \u2192 end A\n   \u2502 \u2192 end B\n   \u2502\n   \u2514\u2500\u2500 Strip 3 \u2192 end A\n \u2192 end B<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We do not recommend connecting all the strips one after the other as if they were a single, very long strip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you do that, always add up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>total power + total current<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and check the capacity of the power supply and the modulator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. 12V or 24V?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the advantages of the calculator is that you can change the voltage and see what happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s take a look at an installation of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>100 W<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12 V<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>100 \u00f7 12 = 8.33 A<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">24 V<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>100 \u00f7 24 = 4.17 A<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the same power, increasing the voltage reduces the current. This can make design easier when dealing with significant distances.
