AISI 316, as used in swimming pools, is an austenitic stainless steel containing chromium, nickel and molybdenum. The presence of molybdenum improves its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion caused by chlorides. For this reason, it is used in numerous components exposed to water, moisture and splashes.

When a ladder, handrail or swimming pool accessory is labelled as being made from AISI 316 or AISI 316L, this designation indicates the grade of stainless steel used. It is neither a trade mark nor a type of finish.

However, the fact that it is AISI 316 does not mean that the material is immune to corrosion. The grade of the steel, the surface finish, the welds, the installation, the water chemistry and the maintenance all determine how it actually performs.

What does AISI 316 mean in the context of swimming pools?

AISI is a designation used to identify different grades of steel. The correspondences normally used are:

  • AISI 316: EN 1.4401 or UNS S31600.
  • AISI 316L: EN 1.4404 or UNS S31603.

These correspondences are for guidance only. To verify the specific material of a product, you should always consult its technical data sheet or certificate.

Chromium forms an extremely thin passive layer on the surface. This protective layer can regenerate, but it can also deteriorate locally where there are deposits, high concentrations of chlorides, aggressive chemicals or areas of standing water.

The International Molybdenum Association It explains that molybdenum is particularly effective at improving resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments.

The lyrics L comes from low-carbon. Its lower carbon content helps to maintain the behaviour of the welded areas in the face of intergranular corrosion.

This does not mean that AISI 316L is immune to corrosion, nor that it is suitable for any saltwater swimming pool. Its typical resistance to chloride pitting is similar to that of AISI 316.

Why is AISI 316 used in swimming pools?

In a swimming pool, there may be a combination of constant humidity, disinfectants, splashes, temperature changes, salts and areas where water evaporates onto the metal.

AISI 316 is used because it offers:

  • Greater resistance to chlorides than AISI 304.
  • Good performance in components exposed to water.
  • Smooth surfaces that make cleaning easier.
  • Ease of manufacturing pipes, bends and welded components.
  • A finish suitable for visible elements.
  • Mechanical strength for access and support components.

The British Stainless Steel Association considers 316 to be preferable to 304 in most standard swimming pool applications. However, it warns that 304 and 316 should not be automatically selected for critical structural components exposed to certain indoor swimming pool environments.

Pool ladders

The stairs remain partially submerged, with some sections situated just above the water level. On these surfaces, splashes may dry out and leave deposits of salt or chemicals.

Mixing different metals can promote galvanic corrosion if the installation has not been designed correctly.

Is AISI 316 suitable for swimming pools with salt chlorination?

The designation AISI 316 does not, in itself, guarantee compatibility with any saltwater swimming pool.

The Flexinox technical catalogue It recommends AISI 316 fittings for use in swimming pools with a typical salt concentration of 3.5 to 5 g/L. It also warns that a high local concentration, even if only temporary, can damage the stainless steel.

This recommendation relates to the fittings and conditions specified by that manufacturer. It should not be automatically applied to complete systems, hydraulic circuits, structural components or products from other brands.

Before installing a fitting in a saltwater swimming pool, you must check the following:

  1. Express authorisation from the manufacturer.
  2. Permissible salinity range.
  3. Screws and fixings.
  4. Need for a sacrificial anode.
  5. Equipotential bonding requirements.
  6. Cleaning and maintenance programme.
  7. Warranty terms and conditions.

During commissioning, do not pour a large amount of salt next to a staircase, handrail or waterfall. The salt must be dissolved and distributed in accordance with the system’s instructions.

Why might rust appear on an AISI 316 fitting in swimming pools?

Chloride concentration

When a splash dries, the water evaporates but the salts remain. Successive splashes can significantly increase the concentration of chlorides.

For this reason, the area immediately above the water level can be particularly harsh.

Pitting corrosion

It manifests itself as small spots or pits. It occurs when chlorides manage to break through the passive layer locally.

Crevice corrosion

It can develop beneath joints, deposits, screws, plates or areas where water collects.

Iron contamination

Carbon steel tools, brushes or wire wool can leave particles on stainless steel. These particles rust and cause stains that appear to have come from the fitting.

Concentrated chemicals

Hydrochloric acid, chlorine-based cleaners and concentrated hypochlorite can cause staining and corrosion. Water treatment products must not be applied directly to metal fittings either.

Poor welds or finishes

Traces of thermal oxidation, contamination during manufacture or an excessively rough surface can reduce local resistance to corrosion.

How to choose an AISI 316 fitting

Before selecting the product, it is advisable to check:

  • Whether it will remain submerged or in the splash zone.
  • Whether the swimming pool uses conventional chlorination or salt chlorination.
  • The permitted salt concentration.
  • Its proximity to the sea.
  • If it is an indoor swimming pool.
  • The water temperature.
  • The presence of welds.
  • The material used for the fixings.
  • Maintenance requirements.
  • The ability to clean all surfaces.

A specific technical assessment must be carried out for structural or safety components. The AISI 316 specification does not replace the relevant calculations, applicable standards or the manufacturer’s instructions.

How to clean and maintain AISI 316

Regular maintenance prevents salts, limescale and dirt from remaining on the surface for too long.

  1. Rinse the surfaces with fresh water.
  2. Use a soft cloth or a nylon brush.
  3. Clean in the direction of the polish.
  4. Use only products that are compatible with stainless steel.
  5. Rinse after using any product.
  6. Dry visible surfaces where possible.
  7. Check welds, bolts, plates and anchors.
  8. Monitor the water’s chemical composition and salinity.
  9. Check the sacrificial anode if it is fitted to the product.
  10. Follow the maintenance instructions provided by the manufacturer.
